London, March 10. [in a discussion about reducing the land
tax] We do not envy the little city trader his splendid
equipages, sumptuous entertainments, grand dresses,
expensive town and country houses, nor his round of balls,
assemblies, operas, plays, and routs, luxuries unknown to
their ancestours; but we think it exceeding hard, that we
are to be burthened with paying the principal of the
outstanding debt, in order to save these sons of profusion a
trifling tax for the interest.
