London, March 23. A comedian of Drury Lane Theatre being
lately examined as an evidence, in a case of an assault,
where a sword was drawn, and a man wounded;--one of the
counsel, who attempted to be witty with him, began his
examination thus; "And so sir, you are the gentleman who ran
away at the sight of the sword." "I am indeed (replied the
other) and you would have run away too had you been in my
situation, notwithstanding all your blustering in this
region of security." The retort occasioned a general
laughter, and the lawyer was obliged to change his tone
immediately, when he saw the perfect composure and
sarcastick readiness of his evidence.
