London, June 10. We hear that yesterday sevennight a grand
ball and entertainment of equal singularity and magnificence
was given by Commodore Gambier on board his Majesty's ship,
Yarmouth, at Chatham; at which were present the principal
officers of the Army, Navy, and Marines, with their ladies,
Commissioner Hanway and his lady, with the principal
officers of the dock-yard, together with many other
gentlemen and ladies. There were splendid illuminations
under colours, that spread a copious canopy above the whole
quarter-deck. The ball was opened with a double minuet, by
the Commodore with the Commissioner's lady, on one side the
quarter-deck, and Captain Pitcairne, with the Commodore's
lady, on the other. An elegant collation refreshed the
company about twelve, after which the dancing recommenced
and continued till about three in the morning.
