Whereas it hath been customary for the inhabitants of this
town on every accident of fire to make the alarm by firing
of guns, beating to arms, and ringing the bells, on which
occasion people usually repaired to the place where the fire
happened, armed and accoutred agreeable to law: public
notice is hereby given that in future the alarm of fire will
be made by ringing the bells only, when the inhabitants are
to assemble unarmed, solely for the purpose of assisting the
firemasters and managers of engines in putting a stop to the
fire, and it is expected that no persons do send out drums
or fire small arms, as hath been usually practiced. By
order of the Commandant, William Carson, William Ancrum,
William Greenwood, William Holliday, John Davies, John
Wagner, Gideon Dupont, John Hopton [?], George Cooke, Fire
Masters.
