London. . . They write from Bagborough in Somersetshire,
that on Tuesday last was buried from that place at Lydiard
St. Laurence, Mrs. Jane Keene, a maiden gentlewoman, aged
92. She order'd by Will four men (each near forty) who had
never kiss'd a woman) for her bearers; three violins and
other instruments of musick, were to play all the way before
her to the parish church where she was buried, which was at
least a mile and half; she gave large directions for
victuals and drink; and no one was to wear mourning, or shew
the least concern; her corpse was attended by at least 4000
people, who seem'd punctually to observe the latter part of
her will; and the bells of both parishes rang all the day;
She once design'd six virgins should dance round her grave:
The corps was rested on a large common, half way between two
parishes, & those psalms sung and play'd by the musick which
were afterwards performed in the same manner in the church.
She died possessed of a plentiful fortune, which she left to
her poor relations.
