New-York, January 16. About eleven o'clock last night the
inhabitants of this city were suddenly and greatly alarmed
by the cry of fire, the striking out of the fire-bell, and
all the other bells in the city; but it was soon after found
that a body of men had entered the new jail, and demanded
the keys of Mr. Mills the keeper, who refusing to deliver
them, received several wounds with a bayonet; they
afterwards, forced the doors, and let loose all or most of
the prisoners; It seems their principal intent was to
release Major Rogers, who a few days ago came to town, was
arrested, and confined in that place, which they effected.
Part of our militia were collected together as soon as
possible by beat of drum, remained under arms all night, and
have taken six of the rioters. A serjeant of the Highlanders
was killed on this occasion, and several other persons
wounded.
