From the London Chronicle. [Copy of an alleged production
of Dr. Swift]
The Distrest Maid, being put to her last shift,
Makes her humble petition to the Rev. Dr. Swift.
Humbly sheweth,
That your petitioner, who is about 25 years of age, has
never been a bride,
Co-heiress to an estate of 800l. per annum beside,
That your petitioner's mother who is old enough to be her
grannum,
Has a jointure on the said estate of 400l. per annum:
Which, together with some incumbrances on the said estate,
Has kept your petitioner's virginity at a very low rate;
