A French account of the Patagonians.
From a letter to Dr. Ma[?]y, Secretary of the Royal Society;
. . . by Abbe' Cryer, F.R.S.
. . . [Description of travels to the straits of Magellan]
This day was spent in looking about the coast for shell-
fish. In the evening, the principal of the savage chiefs
persisted in conducting the French to his camp. They went
with him, for fear of betraying too much distrust by a
refusal. At the repast which was offered them, they were
surrounded by the savages; . . . The savages frequently sang
during the repast, but in a manner so terrible, that they
seemed to utter the cries of bloodshed and horror, rather
than expressions of jollity and pleasure.
