January 9. . . It is currently reported, that the Duke of
Cumberland was entrapped into wedlock by the following
method: The Duke was pouring forth his amorous couplets to
the admired widow in his usual way, out of Prior's Henry and
Emma, and concluded with those four remarkable lines, viz.
Hear, mighty Jove! and conscious Venus hear!
And you, bright maid! believe me whilst I swear!
No time, no change, no future flames shall move,
The well-plac'd basis of my constant love.
The artful widow appeared quite unmoved at his amorous
heroics, and then uttered the following Sternhold and
Hopkins's couplets:
Oh, rather let our humbler curate hear;
Let faithful crape be witness while you swear.
Instead of Goddess, call me dove and honey:
Swear to be ever mine in matrimony.
. . . [8 lines follow.]
