London, January 21. Their Majesties came into the ball-room
last Friday night soon after nine o'clock, and while they
were going round the circle, paying usual compliments, the
band of music continually playing the overture to the
Occasional Oratorio, composed by the late celebrated Mr.
Handel. The ball was opened at half an hour past nine, by
his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester and the Dutchess
of Buccleugh; the minuets lasted till half an hour past
eleven, two country dances only were called; in the second
their Majesties retired, and when that was over, the ball
ended, which was at twelve o'clock. The room was very much
crowded, and the nobility and gentry made a very brilliant
appearance. Upwards of forty minuets were danced.
The most distinguished figure in the ball-room was said to
be Lady Catherine Lee: . . .
The French Ambassador made the most splendid appearance of
any of the foreign ministers that were at court.
