Paris, April 26. An English nobleman being lately charmed
with the talents and beauty of a young actress, whom he knew
to be very discreet, to reward and encourage her virtue, he
wrote her the following letter:
"It is said you are chaste, and have formed a resolution of
continuing so; this is excellent and new for the present
age. I exhort you to never change. I beg your acceptance of
the deed which I now send you; it will entitle you to fifty
guineas per month as long as this fancy shall last. If, by
chance, you should change your mind, I ask the preference,
and will give you a hundred." This last proposal is very
capable of shaking the firmest mind; the answer of this
actress to the nobleman is not yet known.
