London . . . April 20. . . How different a race were the
ancient Romans from the modern English! The former
committed rapes upon the Sabine women, healthy, robust and
spirited dames; and by dint of manhood made them dutiful and
loving wives. A modern Englishman coaxes a little Miss from
a boarding school; in a short time she breaks his head with
her doll, quits his fri[ ] bed, laughs at his folly, runs
away from him, and, after leading him a dance of two years
by her leading strings, leave him to pay the piper, to the
great diversion of all Europe.
