State of South Carolina.
An Ordinance.  To Restrain the Exhibition of Theatrical
Entertainments within the City of Charleston.
Forasmuch as the Exhibition of Theatrical Entertainments
within the city, without permission, or under proper
regulations, may prove of injurious consequence, by
corrupting the morals of youth, apprentices, and servants,
and encouraging idleness, riot and disorder;
  Be It Therefore Ordained by the Honorable the Intendant
and Wardens of Charleston, in City Council assembled, and it
is hereby ordained by the authority of the same, that from
and after the publication hereof all and every person or
persons who shall act or perform, or be aiding or assisting
in the acting, performing, or exhibiting of any tragedy,
comedy, farce, interlude, or other theatrical entertainment
within the City of Charleston, without permission of the
City Council first had and obtained, and under such
regulations as they may establish, shall each forfeit and
pay a fine of ten pounds sterling for every such offence, .
. .
  And be it also ordained by the authority aforesaid, that
any Master or Keeper of any Public House or Tavern in
Charleston, who shall permit or suffer any tragedy, comedy,
farce, or interlude, or other theatrical entertainment to be
acted, performed, or exhibited therein without first had and
obtained as aforesaid, shall forfeit his licence, and be
rendered incapable of obtaining another for the space of
seven years.
  Ratified in City Council this twenty-sixth day of
September, 1783.
