State of South-Carolina. An Ordinance. For establishing
and regulating a nightly guard and watch, in Charleston.
Be it Ordained by the Honourable the Intendant and Wardens
of Charleston, in City Council assembled, . . .
That immediately after passing this Ordinance, a Company of
men shall be raised to act as a nightly guard in Charleston,
and shall consist of one Lieutenant, six non-commissioned
officers, one drummer, and twenty-four privates, which said
Lieutenant shall be appointed by the City-Council, and be
commissioned by the Intendant, and after taking the oaths of
allegiance and office, he shall enroll thirty men and a
drummer, to act as a nightly guard as aforesaid,

and shall cause one Serjeant, one Corporal, the Drummer, and
eight Privates, properly armed and accoutred, to attend
every evening at the City Guard-House, or such other place
as the Intendant shall direct, there to keep a regular guard
every night throughout the year, from one hours after sun-
set until sun-rise the next morning.
