Marblehead, May 1. On Tuesday last, was celebrated in this
place, the joyful restoration of peace to the United States.
-- The day was ushered in by the ringing of bells, and a
federal salute from the principal battery of the town . . .
[14 lines] At sunset, the bells, which had continued
ringing, were silent; and in the evening a number of houses
were brilliantly illuminated. To concluded the joy and
festivity of the day, a beacon, which was erected at the
commencement of the hostilities, being surrounded with
combustibles, was converted to a bonfire, manifested a
desire of burying the hatchet with the Kingdom of Great-
Britain.
