The following copy of verses were sent me by a friend, who
seems to have taken his hint from a little poem of Mr.
Pope's, ---but has pursued the thought a little further;---
the subject is noble, and nearly concerns us all; the lines
pleased me, which makes me willing to communicate them to
the public, and if you please, you may give them a place in
your paper.
I.
Active spark of heav'nly fire
In a clod of earth confin'd,
Ever flutt'ring to aspire
To the great paternal mind;
. . . [24 lines]
The music of your songs to hear
Without the organ of an ear.
. . . [17 lines]
The very same!---Ye heavenly choirs,
Cherubic and seraphic fires!
Come assist my labouring tongue,
Sound aloud the grateful song.
. . . [12 more lines]
