Extract of a letter from an officer at Fort William Henry on
Lake George, dated July 6, 1756.
We live here exceeding well, and have every thing that is
comfortable. . . [8 lines]
We are informed that Sir William Johnson, at the late
Onondaga Treaty, concluded a peace with the chiefs of the
Shawanese and Delaware Indians, the former of which denied
that ever his people had committed hostilities against the
English . . . [3 lines] They laid down the ax, accepted the
War Belt, and sung the War Song, promising to follow the
examples of their uncles the Six Nations, in taking up the
hatchet against the French and all their adherents.
