Norfolk, May 24. On the 13th instant the ship Peggy, Capt.
Andrew, arrived from Glasgow, by whom we received the
interesting and agreeable news that his majesty had been
graciously pleased to give his royal assent to the bill for
repealing the stamp act . . .
The morning of that long wished for day was ushered in by
a display of colours from the church, court-house, ships in
the harbour, &c. ringing of bells, and general discharge of
cannon from two batteries erected for that purpose . . .
[1/2 column, celebrations]
The evening concluded with a very elegant ball and
entertainment, given at the house of Mr. Stephen Tanchard,
at which was present a very numerous company of ladies and
gentlemen, who made a brilliant appearance . . . The whole
was conducted with the utmost regularity, dignity, and
decorum.
