New York, May 26. . . [announcement of repeal of Stamp Act]
whereupon all the bells of the different churches were rung,
and the next day there was a manifestation of the greatest
gratitude shown by the true sons of liberty, who could not
withhold any longer their open and liberal rejoicings on a
matter which so nearly concerned them . . .
This day. On the glorious occasion of a total repeal of
the stamp act, there will be a general meting and rejoicing,
at the house of Mr. R. Howard. . . .
The city will be illuminated . . . After which, repairing
to the field of liberty, a royal salute of 21 cannon was
fired, and that succeeded by a considerable body of the sons
of liberty, collecting at their usual house of public
resort, where an elegant entertainment was prepared,
attended with a band of musick . . .
