An attempt to transfuse the spirit of a quotation from Mr.
Rousseau, inserted in Rind's last Gazette, into English
verse, in compliance with a lady's request; somewhat
travestied, in submission to the refined taste and improved
manners of the present age; which can relish only luscious
songs, ambiguous sentiments, obscene witticisms, lascivious
compositions, salacious tales, and prurient jokes.
. . .[Latin quote]
Damon, should Celia deign to be your wife,
Observe these precepts, you'll be bless'd for life.
Claim all from love, to duty nothing owe,
Cause every favour from the heart to flow.
