Newport (Isle of Wight) April 2. On the news of Mr.
Wilkes's being return by a glorious majority as member of
the county of Middlesex, the genuine spirit of liberty
appeared in this town in full honours. . . .
The ringers being genteely paid, and with the douceur of
45 quarts of good English beer, gave 45 fires on the bells;
45 huzzas were shouted from the tower, on which 45 candles
were lighted 45 minutes after one o'clock.
