To the printer. We think our fathers wise, such fools we
grow,
Our foolish sons, no doubt, will think us so. [signed]
Pope.
It is the fashion at present the abuse the times, the
season, and poor old England. Give me leave, Mr. Printer,
to be out of fashion, and to prove that mankind never were,
in any time, in any season, in any country, so happy as we
are at this very hour. . . Could a Ratcliffe give you
eternal health amidst the pleasures of Vauxhall, Ranelagh,
and midnight routs? Could he ensure you against a fever at
the summer theatre, or the influenza at a horse race in
rainy weather? . . .
