We have been favoured with the following particulars
concerning the ball at court on the Queen's birth day:
Their majesties came into the ball room about nine o'clock,
and after a little time spent in compliments to the dukes of
Gloucester and Cumberland, the Princes of Mecklenburg, and
the nobility, who were very numerous and brilliant, the ball
was opened by the Duke of Gloucester and the Dutchess of
Marlborough; his royal highness danced another minuet with
the Dutchess of Portland. The Duke of Cumberland then
danced two minuets, one with Lady Mary Paules, and one with
Lady Betty Hamilton. Prince Ernest of Mecklenburg danced
two minuets, one with the Countess of Abington, and one with
Lady Bell Grey. Prince George of Mecklenburg danced two
minuets, one with Lady Frances Manners, and one with Lady
Molmeux. The minuets continued until near twelve o'clock,
when country dances began, and lasted about half an hour,
when their majesties left the ball room. The company then
dispersed by degrees, and the room was clear by two o'clock.
