London . . . April 28 . . . Yesterday, according to annual
custom, the treasurers, trustees and subscribers to the
charity schools in London and Westminster, assembled at the
Royal Exchange and at Covent Garden piazza, from whence they
proceeded at the head of the children, in number about 5000,
to Christ Church, Newgate Street, where a most excellent
sermon was preached by the right Rev. the Bishop of Norwich,
and an anthem was sung by the children, in which the whole
body of them joined thrice in chorus, in two parts; which
plan being never before adopted afforded an unexpected and
most agreeable harmony, and gave the congregation, which was
both numerous and polite, a foretaste of the celestial
choir. The above performance, as usual, was conducted by Mr.
Riley. After the service the gentlemen dined together, at
their own expense, at the King's Arms Tavern, Cornhill, and
the children dined at their several schools.
