7 Dec 1769:21 (968 Supplement)
Edinburgh, Sept.25 . . . Friday evening, the 22d instant,
being the anniversary of the birthday of the great Thompson,
author of the Seasons, etc., a number of young gentlemen,
lovers of the muses, stimulated by the late great doings at
Stratford upon Avon, associated to celebrate the memory of
the Scotish bard, the entertainment began with an occasional
prologue, in which was introduced a favourite song on the
coronation of their Majesties, of which that happy day was
likewise the anniversary, to this succeed a glass to the
health of their Majesties, and another to the honour of the
immortal Shakespear; they were followed by a noble ode,
composed and set to music by a young gentleman, in honour of
Thomson, the bard of liberty and friend of peace. After
spending the evening in the elysium of the poets (if such an
expression may be allowed) the entertainment concluded, and
the association broke up with a panegyrick on the works of
Thomson.
[ed: Thomson spelled variously throughout the article]
