London. . . Extract of a letter from Newcastle. I imagine
it will be agreeable to you to be told the humours of the
populace here upon the much talked of 18th of April. You
will here receive an account of the only transaction worth
relating on that occasion. Some of the petitioners here,
tallow chandlers, glaziers, and other tradesmen (who are as
pleased with an excuse to meet over a rump and a dozen of
ale as any alderman of London with a turtle feast) spent the
day at an alehouse on the key (our Wapping) to celebrate
Wilkes's release and drink his health, and in the evening
set out in process for the playhouse, where Cato was
bespoke. . .
