London. . . June 20. . . A gentleman of fortune (Mr. B--e)
who lately kept a celebrated Italian singer, just before
they parted, told her, that for the honour of his family it
was necessary for him to marry; therefore if she would
return to Italy, he would make a handsome addition to the
settlement already made for her. She very readily complied,
and promised to depart the next week. In lass than an hour,
however, he was summoned to attend the lady in her dressing
room, where, to his unspeakable astonishment, he saw near
five hundred pounds worth of fine French and other suits of
rich clothes belonging to him on the fire. He asked the
lady if she was mad. "No, Seignior (says she) I am so
rejoiced at your good resolution for the honour of your
family that I have testified my joy by making a bonefire."
