London. . . July 5. . . It is said a Somersetshire
gentleman, who is supposed to be represented in the Maid of
Bath, offered five thousand pounds if the author would not
indulge the town with that piece; on which answer was sent
him that nothing but an absolute independence of fifty
thousand could possibly keep him from lashing the foibles of
the age.

Application, it is said, has been made to the Lord
Chamberlain, to stop the exhibition of the Maid of Bath, on
account of its personality, with respect to the conduct of a
certain Baronet in a late amorous transaction.
