Charlestown, December 24. On Wednesday last the new theatre
in this town was opened with Mr. Kelly's Word to the Wise,
and High Life Below Stairs, with an occasional prologue and
epilogue spoken by Mr. Hallam and Mrs. Douglas. The
performance itself gave universal satisfaction; Mr. Hallam
in particular, in Captain Dormer, displayed his
extraordinary theatrical talents, in a most spirited manner.
Indeed, all the performers did great justice to their
characters; but that gentleman's superiour abilities were so
remarkably striking, that we could not pass them over
unnoticed. The house is elegantly finished, and supposed,
for the size, to be the most commodious in the continent.
The scenes, which are new, and well designed, the dresses,
musick, and what had a very pleasing effect, the disposition
of the lights, all contributed to the satisfaction of the
audience, who expressed the highest approbation of their
entertainment.
