To the Honourable House of Delegates for the commonwealth of
Virginia, now sitting at Williamsburg:
THE HUMBLE ADDRESS OF A COUNTRY POET
Now liberty is all the plan,
The chief pursuit of ev'ry man
Whose heart is right, and fills the mouth
Of patriots all, from north to south!
. . . [4 lines]
If so, come listen to my lay;
I hope to charm you while I play.
My rural harp, with rapt'rous sound,
Shall make ev'n Tories dance around.
. . . [16 lines]
Now let me strike the strings once more,
And send the sound from shore to shore!
. . . [28 lines]
While joined in unions golden band,
Can live without you or your King,
And will do so. Sing! Sing! Sing! Sing!
