London . . . Extract of a letter from Derby, November 9. On
Wednesday morning last, after the arrival of the Gazette
Extraordinary, with an account of New York being taken by
his Majesty's forces, the bells were rang in the several
parish churches in this town, at night many bonfires were
made, and particularly a very large one before the new
Assembly room in the market place, where many respectable
gentlemen and tradesmen assembled, and drank success to his
Majesty's arms. They then paraded the town, preceded by
torches, flags, drums, and a band of music; and were
followed by a numerous and orderly populace, who expressed
their joy on the occasion by repeated shouts of applause for
the late victory.
