Whitehall, Dec 24. . . [6 paragraph and an accompanying
diagram describe the funeral procession of Queen Caroline.
The 5th paragraph begins]
As soon as the procession came to the north door of
Westminster Abbey, the Lord Bishop of Rochester, as dean,
and the prebendaries, with the masters, scholars, and Choir
Royal, attending there in their proper habits, with wax
tapers in their hands, and the dean and prebendaries in
their copes; they all join'd in the procession, next before
Norroy King at Arms; and the moment the Royal Corpse enter'd
the church, they began to sing the anthem in the burial-
service, which lasted till the whole procession passed thro'
the North and South isles of the church, to King Henry the
VIIth's Chapel. . . [2 sentences describe the interment of
the body] Then followed another anthem composed on purpose
for this solemn occasion: After which, they all returned in
the same order the nearest way, thro' the tombs, to the
north door of the abbey; where the dean and prebendaries,
the masters, scholars, and Choir of Westminster, with the
Choir of the chapel Royal, attended, 'til the whole
procession was gone out of the church. . . [The paragraph
concludes with description of the procession from the
church; followed by]
During the whole solemnity, the great bells of the
cathedral of St. Paul and of many churches in London and
Westminster, were tolled. And the Tower guns kept firing
all the while, at a minute's distance between each.
