London, Aug 8. On Thursday the 27th past, his Grace the
Duke of Portland made a grand entertainment at his seat at
Bulstrode, in the County of Bucks, where were present the
Right Hon. the Earl and Countess of Oxford, and many other
persons of quality and distinction, and great rejoicings for
the birth of his son, the Right Hon. the Marquis of
Titchfield.
In the garden is a bason exceeding beautiful, made out
of a block of white marble 10 feet diameter; finely fluted
inside and outside, set upon a pedestal (adorn'd with basso
relievo) and steps, in which was four hogsheads of punch.
The nobility and gentry walked round and drank out of it,
and were succeded by a concourse of people, who drank out of
it also, accompanied with french horns, loud hazza's and
many other acclamations of joy. The country people, who
flocked in great numbers, had tubs of punch carried to them
without the front gate, where there were tables and benches
errected for that purpose; but had the honour of His Grace's
permission to be in the garden to see the illumination and
fireworks, which were exquisitely fine, and executed with
the utmost nicety and dexterity. . . [The remainder of this
paragraph and the next paragraph describe these
illuminations]
