The following ode was design'd to be published on New Year's
Day, but came too late to hand.
AN ODE FOR NEW YEAR'S DAY, 1768.
I.
See winter's stern ungovern'd train,
Spreads desolation o'er the plain;
See the once fine blooming fields,
Disrob'd of all their verdant pride;
. . . [16 lines]
II.
Awake! strike ev'ry tuneful string,
Ye dear Virginian maids;
Arise ye fair and sweetly sing,
And lend your fav'rite aids
. . . [3 lines]
Soon as the evening shades advance,
Join your glad swains in rural dance,
Till morning stars appear.
. . . [28 lines]
And hail the new year with melodious strains.
