WR.735.022
16 Jun 1735:21 (194)
Wednesday last being the anniversary of his Majesty's happy
accession to the throne, when he entered the 9th year of his
reign, the same was observed here with all possible
demonstrations of joy and loyalty. At noon the cannon at
Castle William were fired, as were those on board his
Majesty's Ship Scarborough, and other ships and vessels in
the harbour. On this occasion Capt. Durell had a splendid
dinner dress'd on board the Scarborough, at which were His
Excellency the Governour and his Lady, with a great number
of other gentlemen and ladies of the first rank. In the
afternoon the regiment of militia of the town, consisting of
12 companies, commanded by Col. Winslow, was mustered in the
Common, where having performed their manual exercise, each
company by itself, they were drawn up in a regiment, and
reviewed by His Excellency, attended by a vast number of the
principal gentlemen in town and country, the officers paying
the standing salute as they passed along. When this was
over, His Excellency, attended as before, retired to a tent
prepared for him in a convenient place on the Common, where
he was again saluted by the officers as they marched out of
the field. The regiment being again drawn up in King-Street
below the Town House, fired three vollies, each volley being
followed with three loud huzzas. After the soldiers were
dismissed, the officers went to the Council Chamber, where
were assembled His Excellency the Governour, the Hon. His
Majesty's Council, a great number of the Hon. House of
Representatives, with the civil and military officers of
this and the neighbouring towns, and abundance of other
gentlemen. Here the usual loyal healths were drank, the
musick from a great variety of instruments sweetly playing
all the time, and the evening concluded with illuminations,
and other tokens of joy and satisfaction.
