USER'S GUIDE

This publication consists of three main parts: Source Data, Dance Data and Bibliography. There are two Indexes to help in accessing the data: The Source Index and the Title Index, plus one Search Engine.

The Source Data contains detailed information on each separate Item or Dance, published in the various editions of The Dancing Master. The Source Data can be used by browsing the Tables of Contents for each separate edition. To browse the Table of Contents for any edition, click on the Browse Source Index link in the Table of Contents column of this page, then click on the link to the edition of interest. Each Source Index lists the dances sequentially as they appear in that edition. Fields in each Source Index include: Title/Link, Page, Source, Actives, Form, and Ur Dance Link. The Title/Link field contains a link to the Source Data file on that Item or Dance. That Source Data file contains detailed data for that Dance, including the following fields: Title, Page, Figures, Comments, Date, Short Title, Source Library, Form, Actives, Occurrences, Ur Dance, Time Signature, Key Signature, Do, Incipit, Stress Notes, and Image/Link. For a description of these fields refer to the Data Collection Process page. The Image/Link field contains a link to the Ur Dance page under that title. There are links between the Figures field, Comments field, Form field and Actives field to explanatory material in the Data Collection Process to help in understanding the data codes and symbols.

To browse the Title Index, click on the Browse Title Index in the Table of Contents column of this page, then click on the letter for the initial letter of the Title of interest. The Title Index lists each Title or Alternate Title for the Items in The Dancing Master. Fields in the each Index include: Title/Link, Page, Source, Actives, Form, and Ur Dance Link. Links under each Title are the same as described for the Source Index, above.

To search the database, click on the Search Dance Data in the Table of Contents column of this page. The Search Engine will search for whole words, primarily, but the "wildcard character "*" can be used at the ends of words (i.e. Search for "well*" to find "Well-Hall", "Wellhall", and "Well-House".).
