Learn the basics of Raqs Sharqi with Renee! In this 8-week course, we will breakdown core isolations, footwork, armwork, rhythms, and more to get you started. Commonly known as “Belly Dance” in the west, Raqs Sharqi is the Egyptian name for an art form developed by urban, professional dancers who have traditionally performed as soloists at wedding celebrations, in night clubs, and in early Egyptian movies. The movements are rooted in the folk dances of the region, incorporating elements of western dance traditions, and are characterized by skillful refinement. and musicality. The dance is closely connected with classical Arabic music—indeed, many classical tunes have been composed for dance and, even, for individual dancers. Raqs Sharqi celebrates each dancer’s unique style and interpretation of the music. Everyone is welcome! Each class of this 8 week series will build on each other. Registering for the entire series is highly recommended, however drop-ins will be allowed.

About the Instructor: Renee took “Introduction to Arabic Dance” at the U of M, taught by Cassandra Shore, in 1996. She fell in love with the dance and the music and she hasn’t stopped dancing since! She continued training, primarily at the Cassandra School, and had the wonderful opportunity to dance with Jawaahir Dance Company from 2006-2024. Renee began teaching over 15 years ago, which is by far her favorite part. Building community, facilitating education, and creating performance opportunities for dancers through her many years of service with the Guild of Middle Eastern Dance had been some of her most rewarding work. You can find Renee teaching workshops and weekly classes; performing as a soloist and in groups; and putting on dance events with her fellow Guild Officers.
