John Tams

John Tams is delighted to make his debut for Live at Sam’s and Live to Your Living Room this November.

John’s work has spanned 6 decades in every performance medium. His performance backstory includes Muckram Wakes, The Albion Band, Home Service and his duo with Barry Coope. He’s also known for his work with The National Theatre (War Horse), as well as having credits on television (Sharpe) and radio (The Radio Ballads) and playing on stages throughout the UK and across the world.

John is a recognised authority on vernacular music – a seven times winner at the BBC Folk Awards. His theatre credits include work at the Old Vic, the RSC, The Globe, Sheffield Crucible, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Birmingham Rep, Joint Stock, Chichester Festival Theatre and 7:84. At the National Theatre, he has worked as actor and musical director/composer on over 30 productions, including The Mysteries, Lark Rise to Candleford, and Glengarry Glen Ross, with many productions being transferred to the West End or toured. He played Daniel Hagman in the TV series Sharpe, for which he was script associate, co-writing the score. For radio, he was executive music director of The Radio Ballads, winning gold at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

As an original member of the creative team that brought War Horse to the stage, John has since toured the world as a production executive. His performance of “Only Remembered” before the late Queen Elizabeth at The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall was watched, globally by over 70 million viewers. He worked with Steven Spielberg on the movie, and his adaptation of the book toured as a ‘concert’ reading with author Sir Michael Morpurgo, inspired by a BBC Radio 2 version which he directed featuring Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn and Bob Hoskins.

John has made over 60 albums, and continues to tour festival and concert stages. He also holds Honorary Doctorates from Sheffield Hallam and Derby universities. His ongoing tour is entitled Don’t Get Me Started…! – let’s see where it takes us, eh?

About the Gig

This hybrid gig is hosted in partnership with our friends at Live At Sam’s. The gig will be held at St Andrew’s Church in Sheffield. You can go along to the gig in person or watch online from wherever you are. Our gigs allow interaction between artists and audiences, so the artist can hear you applaud and you can even have the chance to ask them any burning questions.

Tickets are £18, with the option to pay a bit less (£12) or a bit more (£30) depending on what is affordable for you. You only need one ticket per household.
