Live to Your Living Room

Steve Knightley is a renowned musician and songwriter with a career spanning over three decades. His musical journey began at the age of 14 when he picked up a guitar and started playing. By the time he was 16, he had already performed his first gig and was busking on the streets of Sweden at 17. He taught PJ Harvey guitar in Dorset before making his mark on the London rock scene in his early thirties.

In 1994, Steve founded Show of Hands, a band that has been hailed by Peter Gabriel as “one of the great English bands.” Over the years, he has recorded over thirty albums and played on four tracks and the title track of Mick Jagger’s solo album Goddess in the Doorway. He has also written songs for the hit musical Fishermen’s Friends and Kristin Scott Thomas personally chose Steve’s song The Mermaid for the wedding scene of her directorial debut movie My Mother’s Wedding starring Scarlett Johanssen.

Steve’s achievements extend beyond his musical career. In 2016, he served as the artistic director of the iconic Shrouds of the Somme installation. He was made an Honorary Doctor of Music by Plymouth University in 2015 and an Honorary Rifleman by the 6th Battalion The Rifles in 2019. He also holds a degree in politics and history.

Steve’s talent as a songwriter has been recognised with numerous accolades. He was named Tom Robinson’s Songwriter of the 90s and has received four BBC Folk Awards. He has played over 4000 gigs in various venues including folk clubs, community centres, theatres, festivals, churches, and cathedrals. His Grow Your Own Gig tour reached 350 village halls.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Steve continued to create, generating 100 hours of content over lockdown. He has played the Royal Albert Hall six times, most recently in 2023, cementing his status as one of the most accomplished and enduring musicians of our time. Steve Knightley’s passion for music, dedication to his craft, and commitment to making a positive impact on society make him a true icon in the music industry.
